left side of heart

The left side of the heart receives oxygen-rich blood from the lungs and pumps it to the rest of the body. The left side of the heart includes the left atrium, left ventricle, and aortic valve:
  • Left atrium: Receives oxygen-rich blood from the lungs through pulmonary veins
  • Left ventricle: Pumps oxygenated blood to the body by contracting and forcing blood through the aortic valve. The left ventricle is larger and stronger than the right ventricle because it has to pump blood throughout the body.
  • Aortic valve: Allows oxygenated blood to pass through from the left ventricle to the aorta, which then distributes it to the rest of the body.
